Katni is located in the central part of Madhya Pradesh with the headquarters at Katni town. It is one of the district of Jabalpur division.Till April 1998, Katni city used to be a tehsil of Jabalpur district.Katni was declared a district on 28.05.1998.
Katni is conglomeration of culture from three different cultural states viz. Mahakausal, Bundelkhand, and Baghelkhand. There are three different stories which reveals why Katni is called Mudwara.
Katni junction is having half circular Mode (turn) from wagon yard. So people call it “Mudwara”.
Another story is that there was a village call Modwar that has been given as a reward of bravery for cutting Mud (heads). A similar story is about the British government used to cut heads of Baggies and Plunderers, and hang them in squares to afraid people of doing crimes.
District and Sessions Court Katni was established on 01.04.2002. Shri Sharad Srivastava was appointed the first District and Sessions Judge by whom he held the post from 17.05.2002 to 04.02.2006. The first Chief Judicial Magistrate was Shri B.P. Singh was appointed.
There are total 7 tehsils of Katni district which are Katni Mudwara, Vijayraghavgarh, Bahoriband, Dhimarkheda, Barwara, Rethi and Barhi. And three civil courts are currently operating. Which are Vijayraghavgarh, Dhimarkheda, Barhi.
